Psoriasis is a noncontagious skin condition that produces plaques of thickened, scaling skin. The dry flakes of skin scales are thought to result from the excessively rapid proliferation of skin cells triggered by inflammation in the body produced by specialised white blood cells called lymphocytes. Psoriasis commonly affects the skin of the elbows, knees, and scalp.

Skin cells are normally made and replaced every three to four weeks, but in psoriasis this process only lasts about three to seven days. The resulting build-up of skin cells is what creates the patches associated with psoriasis.

The condition isn't contagious, so it can't be spread from person to person.
